While I am only beginning my journey as an educator – learning all the ins and outs – I decided to use a self-made jeopardy to see where students were at in their understanding of solutions, pH and solubility. What I would do now, is I would have asked every student to grab a white board and write their answers down individually, rather than having them answer as one person for a whole group – this would be more telling for a formative assessment.
I created a jeopardy based on what the students had directly learned in class, so that it was tailored specifically to them and should have been completely accessible to all. Questions were split into the topics:
- Heterogeneous or Homogenous
- Solvent or Solute
- Acidic or Basic
- For Fun
The first three topics were applicable entirely to science, and “For Fun” had questions about their reading, math, basic science, and one random trivia question.
Students showed their understanding by talking to their groups and then saying the answer out to the class, and ultimately they enjoyed the activity – there are some adjustments I will make the next time I create a jeopardy game!
This activity came right after making ice cream.
