This lesson included reading “Under My Hijab” by Hena Khan, which will help show diversity to the students. We engaged in a conversation about inclusivity, as it relates to community and how to celebrate differences and similarities. The second part of this lesson will be asking students to draw their faces in little detail, and then construct them with different types of beans.
This lesson was based on the grade 6 and 7 Arts Education curriculum – focusing on “exploring relationships between identity, place, culture, society, and belonging through the arts,” as the competency and “purposeful application of elements and principles to create meaning in the arts – visual arts: elements of design: line, shape, space, texture, colour, form,” as the content. This was under the big idea of “engaging in creative expression and experiences expands people’s sense of identity and community.” which I would implore was the most vital part of this activity.
